Smart partitioning is a process that divides application databases into independent, relationally intact partitions called segments. Segments are database partitions with a business definition. Before you implement smart partitioning, you specify high-level business policies based on the application data model. The ILM Engine creates segments based on the dimensions you define in a data classification.
Smart partitioning can help increase application performance by allowing users to access only specific segments. Smart partitioning can also leverage native database technologies to compress segments, resulting smaller storage requirements. Tiered storage and other database optimization techniques are also available.
