Differing Needs for Name Search and Matching

The nature of the data used in name search and matching applications varies considerably. The name, address and identification data used in a customer information system is very different from that in a hospital patient identification system, which in turn is very different from the data used in a police persons of interest or criminal records system.
The quality of the identification data in a customer information system will be much better than the quality in a mailing file purchased to use in a marketing campaign. The data in criminal records will be of very different quality than data in an incident reporting system.
The nature of the business applications requiring name search and matching vary considerably as does the relative importance of "name search" or "name matching" between different business applications and types of users.
The need to quickly find a customer’s account number given his or her name, is quite different from the need to prove that a prospective customer is not already on file. The need to ensure that a prospective customer is not involved in "known fraud", or that a person is not on a police "warrants" or "criminal record" file requires an exhaustive search.
Some online applications can be designed to let end users make matching choices from displays, while other critical or high volume online applications and batch applications can be designed with fully automated matching without human intervention.
The SSA-NAME3 software will enable an organization to use a standard set of tools, designs and strategies to satisfy all varying name search and matching needs of the organization.
