Backup and Restore Guidelines

Use the following guidelines when you back up or restore the Data Vault:

To ensure that you can recover archived data from data deletion or corruption, back up the Data Vault files after each time you run a Data Vault Loader job. Also back up the ssa.ini and nucleus.ini files when you modify the Data Vault Service configuration.

To ensure that the metadata in the Data Vault repository provides the correct information about the data files in the Data Vault, back up the Data Vault repository and data files at the same time.

For example, on UNIX, tar the Data Vault repository and data files into one tarball with one timestamp. When you restore the backup files, the metadata in the Data Vault repository will correctly describe the data files.

Use the parameters in the nucleus.ini configuration file to determine the location and name of the Data Vault repository. On the server that hosts the Data Vault Service, view the nucleus.ini to get the file and directory information.

Parameter	File	Description
DatabasePath	nucleus.ini	Directory where the Data Vault repository is located.
DATABASE section	nucleus.ini	Name of the Data Vault repository file. The file name is the same as the name of the DATABASE section with an extension of `.n00`. For example, if the nucleus.ini has a database entry of `[DATABASE meta]`, then the name of the Data Vault repository file is `meta.n00`.

The location of the Data Vault data files is specified in the archive target connection in Data Archive.

Log in to Data Archive and view the target connection for the Data Vault you want to back up or restore. The Data Vault SCT Files Directory property of the target connection defines the location of the Data Vault data files.
