State or Territory Code

Output port that returns a numerical code to identify the state or territory to which an Australia address belongs.
States and territories are the largest sub-national divisions that the Australian Statistical Geography Standard defines. A state or territory comprises one or more level-four statistical areas.

State or Territory Code Usage

Select the State or Territory Code port to write a single-digit code to an Australia address that identifies the state or territory to which the address belongs.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics also recognizes the name of the state or territory. To return the state or territory name, select the State or Territory Name port.

State or Territory Code Outputs

The Australian Statistical Geography Standard recognizes 12 states and territories. However, the Australian Statistical Geography Standard combines four territories into a single unit for statistical purposes. The State or Territory Code port returns the codes that the Australian Statistical Geography Standard uses.

  • Jervis Bay Territory
  • Territory of Christmas Island
  • Territory of the Cocos (Keeling) Islands
  • Territory of Norfolk Island
The Australian Statistical Geography Standard added Norfolk Island to the group of Other Territories in 2016.
