Defining the Set of SMF Data Sets to Use for Reporting

To report SMF statistics that were recorded during a PowerCenter session run, configure the set of SMF archived data sets that contain the SMF records that were written during this period.
This procedure uses the MVS SWITCH SMF command. If you do not have authority to issue this command, contact your SMF or system administrator.
  1. In the z/OS console, switch the SMF data set to which the PowerExchange Listener writes SMF records by submitting the following command:
    /SWITCH SMF
This step creates a base archived data set.
  2. Record the generation data set name or generation data group (GDG) number of the base data set that was just archived.
The next generation data set (+1 data set) will be used as the starting data set for reporting.
  3. Run the PowerCenter session with the PowerExchange Listener that produces SMF statistics records.
  4. Switch the SMF data set again to create another archived SMF data set.
  5. Determine the generation data set name or GDG number of the last archived SMF data set.
  6. In the SMFFILE DD statement of the DTLSMFRP JCL, concatenate all of the archived SMF data sets starting from the +1 generation data set up to the last archived data set. These archived data sets include the PowerExchange SMF records that were produced when the session run. The DTLSMFRP program will use these data sets to generate reports that contain the SMF statistics for PowerExchange and the PowerCenter session.
Many SMF archived data sets can be created during a session run.
For more information, see Sample JCL for Generating Reports.
