A data asset represents the source that contains metadata.
Business terms can contain links to the following types of data assets:
Data domains. A predefined or user-defined Model repository object that represents the functional meaning of a column based on the column data or column name. Examples are Social Security number, credit card number, and email ID.
Data objects. Sources used to extract metadata for analysis.
For example, sensitive data such as Social Security numbers are stored in a data domain. The data asset for the business term "sensitive data" contains a link to the data domain location. An auditor who reads the business term can see the location where sensitive data is stored.
