Universal Resources Overview

Universal Resources Overview

You can create and configure universal resources to extract metadata from metadata sources for which Metadata Manager does not package a model. You can create universal resources to extract metadata from certain business intelligence, data integration, data modeling, and database management metadata sources.
For example, you need to extract metadata from QlikView QVD or QVW files, but Metadata Manager does not package a model for QlikView. You can create a universal resource to extract metadata from QlikView Files.
The universal resources that you create behave in the same way as packaged resources. You configure connection assignments for objects in universal resources in the same way that you do for objects in packaged resources. You cannot change the classes in the model that is associated with a universal resource. However, you can add custom attributes for the model classes, just as you do for packaged resources.
To create a universal resource, perform the following tasks:
  1. Create a universal XConnect that represents the metadata source type.
    For example, you might create an XConnect for Apache Hadoop Hive Server, or QlikView Files. The XConnect includes the model for the metadata source.
  2. Create the resource that represents your metadata source.
    You can create multiple resources for each XConnect that you create. So if you create an XConnect for QlikView Files, you can create multiple resources that are based on the QlikView model.
You create universal XConnects through the Universal Connectivity Framework. The Universal Connectivity Framework contains the software components that you use to develop universal XConnects. It includes all of the tools and artifacts that you need to create universal XConnects, models, and resources.
The Universal Connectivity Framework (UCF) is architected using an Informatica OEM partner solution (the Meta Integration Model Bridge). See the Product Availability Matrix (PAM) to find the list of sources and version specific details from which the Universal Connectivity Framework can extract metadata and the "Statement of Support" document to understand the supportability aspects related to the usage of the Universal Connectivity Framework. The universal models and resources that you create using the Universal Connectivity Framework might have inconsistencies in appearance and behavior when compared with packaged models and resources.
