Syntax for NLS_LANG

Syntax for NLS_LANG

The NLS_LANG setting uses the following format: 
NLS_LANG = <LANGUAGE>_<TERRITORY>.<CHARACTERSET>
The following table describes the parameters:
Parameter
Description
LANGUAGE
Specifies the language used for Oracle messages, in addition to the names of days and months.
TERRITORY
Specifies monetary and numeric formats, in addition to territory and conventions for calculating week and day numbers.
CHARACTERSET
Controls the character set that the client application uses. Alternatively, this parameter matches your Windows code page or can be set to UTF-8 for a Unicode application.
The character set defined with the NLS_LANG setting does not change the client character set. Instead, the Oracle database converts data to the defined character set. The NLS_LANG setting never inherits the character set from the server.
