Before you create a universal resource, you might have to configure the metadata source. If you do not correctly configure the metadata source, the metadata load can fail. The configuration requirements for a metadata source vary based on the metadata source.
For example, to configure the metadata source, you might have to complete some of the following tasks:
Verify that the source system is available and running.
When you extract metadata from a source system such as a business intelligence tool or a relational database, the source system usually needs to be available and running. When you extract metadata from a file, the source system does not usually need to be running.
Install the Metadata Manager Agent on the machine that runs the vendor supplied software.
To extract metadata from some business intelligence, data integration, or data modeling metadata sources, you must install the Metadata Manager Agent on the machine that runs the vendor supplied software. This is required when the Metadata Manager Agent uses COM APIs to extract metadata. For example, to extract metadata from QlikView Files, the Metadata Manager Agent and the QlikView software must be on the same machine. However, to extract metadata from Cognos, the Metadata Manager Agent does not have to be on the same machine as the Cognos Content Manager.
To verify the metadata source configuration requirements, see the website of Informatica's OEM partner, Meta Integration Technology Inc.:
The Supported Tools page for the metadata source shows the configuration requirements. The Metadata Manager Agent metadata source configuration requirements are identical to the Meta Integration Model Bridge (MIMB) metadata source configuration requirements.
The following image shows an example of the Supported Tools page for the QlikView Files bridge:
The Bridge Specifications section shows the configuration requirements for the metadata source.
If the Metadata Manager Agent uses COM APIs to extract metadata, the Metadata Manager Agent and the vendor supplied software for the metadata source must be on the same machine.
